Earth Day

About Earth Day

Senator Gaylord Nelson founder of Earth Day conceived of it as a day for learning about America's national lands and their wildlife, and how we can protect them by doing a better job of saving energy. He saw a connection between protecting the wilderness and saving energy, and believed if we study both, we will discover some surprising links. Thanks to Earth Day, you can learn more about wilderness and protecting the environment; and with that knowledge and support, the world will have clean air and water, healthy fish and wildlife, and beautiful places to visit forever.

Senator Gaylord Nelson believed strongly that education is the key to changing people's attitudes about the environment, and he devoted much of his energy to that challenge. Not long before his death, he answered some of the questions he was most often asked about Earth Day.

Joanne Woodward
Nature Conservancy Former Board Member

Oscar-winning actress and environmental activist Joanne Woodward is a long-time Earth Day supporter and former member of The Nature Conservancy's Board of Directors. She writes, "I remember the first Earth Day, my kids were small and Paul and I took them out and picked up garbage. I wanted them to know what it was about. Of course, doing such a small thing is not going to solve the world's complex environmental problems. But I do think it creates awareness among the next generations. It is upsetting that many people don't seem to observe what's happening to the environment, what's happening in terms of global warming, the loss of habitats and wild things."
