Sweet Idea!

My sons have brought home everything from gift wrap to flower bulbs to sell for fundraising, but the brand-name candy bars that our Temple City National Little League sells are the most successful. At a dollar apiece, these large, well-known brands are a great value.

They're also easy for my husband to take in to the office. He leaves them in the break room with a coffee can for the donations. Who can resist a Snickers bar with their coffee in the afternoon?

In the neighborhood, people who want to help out the local Little League can do it easily and quickly. They don't have to look through a catalog, write a check, or wait for their order to be delivered. All they have to do is come up with a dollar. Most people buy three or four, so everyone in the family can have a treat after dinner. It's hard to resist a cute kid, a good cause and tempting candy! --Karen E. Klein Scauzillo, Temple City, CA

Great Idea:

More Than Just A Good Swedish Meatball!

Regular customers of IKEA know that they serve a great Swedish Meatball, but very few people are aware of the company's tradition of reaching out to the community with clever and original FundRaising ideas.

After-Hours Pajama Party

On February 8th, IKEA of Burbank, CA hosted an exciting event titled, "An Insomniac's Dream Come True". Annie Van Bebber and Mandy Barton of FundRaisers.com were on the scene when the doors opened to hundreds of pajama-clad customers.
From ten in the evening until one in the morning, IKEA employees greeted customers with milk and cookies and "Sleep Well Packs". Knowledgeable co-workers offered advice on building a better bedroom, and experts from the Valley Sleep Center presented information on sleep disorders. This extrordinary shopping experience was more than just a special sales event. A contribution and store sales from the event were matched and donated to the Good Shepard Center for Homeless Women and Children, located in the Echo Park an area of downtown Los Angeles.

Each IKEA store has the freedom to choose how they will support their local community, and they are allowed to express their own personality in the campaign themes. In addition to the Insomniacs Event, IKEA Burbank sponsors needy children at Christmas, promoting the donation of toys and clothing. IKEA co-workers volunteer to read to children at local children's hospitals. The objective is to have fun while having a heart by seeking out non-traditional events to foster their giving programs.

Team Spirit & Holiday Spirit

"Each year, we donate $1500 to the Burbank High School Football Team." says Christine Pierce, Project Coordinator of Ikea in Burbank, California. "In exchange, the members of the team pitch in to help us with our annual Christmas tree sale. After school and on the weekends, the students unload trucks, assist customers in choosing a tree, and load the tree into the customer's car. Each athlete earns money towards their equipment by volunteering. The coaches also volunteer to help organize and supervise the players. This year, we sold over 2000 trees in three days. The team set a record by unloading 750 trees in just 32 minutes!"

"The Ikea Christmas tree sale has turned into more than just a fundraiser for the football team." Coach Childress writes. "It's a chance for the players to interact with the community and to get into the holiday spirit. Ruzen Arana, our Varsity Center, told me that it really makes him feel good to see the excited faces of the children when he finds a nice tree for a family. Yes, it's a way for the football team to make money, but it's more than that. The players learn about helping others, even if it's something as simple as carrying a tree to someone's car." --Mandy Barton

Teaming Up With IKEA

IKEA's policy of community giving follows specific critera, but the program is flexible enough to allow each store to serve the specific needs of its community, while applying its own personality to the programs. The stores partner with local causes that fall within one or more of these four categories: 1) Children and Families, 2) Affordable Housing, 3) The Enviroment, and 4) Community Services. If you are interested in planning a FundRaising event with IKEA, contact your local IKEA store manager.
